1836.1 William died on 12 September 1857, at
lost at sea aboard the S.S. Central America off Cape
Hatteras, Went down with his ship, at age 43. In 1851,
William Lewis Herndon led the first scientific expedition
into the Amazon. He was called the "Doctor
Livingstone" of the Amazon. He wrote a book of his
exploits, which Mark Twain later stated was instrumental in
his writing of "Life on the Mississippi."
In 1855 he was made Captain of the S.S. Central America, which carried the U.S. Mails between New York and Aspinwall. The Central America was a side-wheeled steamship that had recently been renamed from the George Law. The fatal trip was just the second sailing under the new name. Leaving Panama, they stopped in Cuba after four days. On Sept. 9 the Central America ran into a hurricane, and by Sept. 11, the engines and pumps stopped running despite all efforts. Herndon ordered all men (including passengers) to man a bucket brigade in a futile attempt to bail the water from the ship. But it soon became apparent that the ship was doomed. At 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, Sept. 12, the Marie, a small freighter, was spotted and Capt.. Herndon was able to transfer 100 by lifeboat to the Marie, including all of the 31 women and 28 children aboard. But 478 men remained aboard as it became impossible to continue rescue operations. In gale force winds, the Central America went down on September 12, 1857, at approximately 9:00 P.M., taking the Captain and 425 other souls, including three million dollars in gold bullion and coins (1857 value) from the California gold fields. About 1:00 A.M. the Swedish freighter "Ellen" accidently sailed into the middle of the remaining survivors, floating in the sea. As many were rescued as could be found, but after four hours in the water, many had already given up hope. Amazingly, two crewmen were found alive nine days later, and more than four undred miles from the sinking. Altogether, more than 150 survived the disaster. The story made headlines in more than 200 newspapers around the world. At the time, it was the worst peace-time Naval disaster on record. The loss of the newly minted gold double eagles and more than 15 tons of gold bullion, estimated at 20 percent of the current (1999) gold supply in Wall Street vaults, created a panic on Wall Street. The loss of the gold was the straw that broke the camel's back. Banks that were backed by gold began the currency run, and by mid-October 1857 the nation was in a full financial depression. In 1988 the Columbus America Discovery Group located the remains of the Central America in 8,000 feet of water, approximately 200 miles off the coast of North Carolina. An estimated $150,000,000 in gold coinage had been recovered by 1998 but the main stock of commercial gold bars had not been located. A monument was erected in the memory of Captain Herndon at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland..1 |
