An electronic version of the Louisville, Kentucky City Directory and Business Advertiser 1859 - 1860. General and Business Directory and other Valuable Statistical Information; compiled by Henry Tanner, General Western and Southern Directory Publisher and Compiler; Distributed by Maxwell & Co., Booksellers and Stationers, Main Street, Louisville.
An important publication for this border city, issued just prior to the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War. They simply do not print them this way any more. Containing a complete general directory as well as a business directory and additional statistical information.
"THE NAME , OCCUPATION, AND ADDRESS OF EVERY RESIDENT WITHIN THE CITY BOUNDARIES; EVERY BRANCH OF BUSINESS, PROFESSION, OR TRADE, ALPHABETICALLY ARRANGED AND CLASSIFIED UNDER APPROPRIATE READINGS; AN APPENDIX EXHIBITING FULL LISTS OF COURTS, BANKS, CHURCHES, PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS, SOCIETIES; LISTS OF POST OFFICES IN THE STATE, ETC., ETC."
In fact, if you look up the Fire Department, you find not only the Chief and officers of the department, but the individual firemen as well; the Post Office lists the clerks as well as the Postmaster and Ass't. Postmaster.
An invaluable genealogical resource as well as a historically significant resource for pre-civil war Louisville. The CD is in Portable Document Format (PDF) and requires Adobe Acrobat® Reader, which is available free online if you do not already have it. Requires Windows® Version 2000 or higher. Instructions included. Available only on CD ROM.
